Welcome to Photo School for Moms.com

Welcome to this new online community for moms who want to beautifully capture their kid’s childhood memories without spending a fortune on professional photographers or invest 2 years learning how to use their camera.

Here’s the inspiration for this website.

My daughter Katie was born in late 2008. I quickly realized that my little Canon pocket camera was not going to cut it so I upgraded and my husband surprised me with David Pogue’s Digital Photography: The Missing Manual. Wow! This book changed everything for me. I realized that I could take beautiful pictures even with a point and shoot camera. It helped me understand the basics and demystified everything from the different scene modes to explained how to accomplish various effects like capturing silhouettes, fireworks, night shots, and creating blurry background-portrait shots! I love this book so much that it’s the first thing I recommend to my girlfriends whenevery they ask how I got started. For under $16, you can’t go wrong. (There’s a link to the book in the side panel on the left.)

The following Mother’s Day my husband surprised me with my first dSLR camera and that is the fateful day that he said he lost me for the next two years as I surfed the web and learned everything I could about digital photography. Along with photography I also discovered digital scrapbooking and have been capturing and sharing my family’s special moments ever since. (Everyone looks forward to the latest custom made photobooks and photo-related gifts.)

Along this journey, I discovered many communites for moms with cameras and for digital scrapbookers. Between the two types of communities I built up my knowledge, photography skills, and learned how to use applications like Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. But I discovered that not everyone wants to be a professional photographer. Sometimes, all folks want is to capture a decent picture of their kids! Even for all the time I have invested in learning this craft and though I occassionally photograph friends and family’s kids beyond my own, I get the greatest pleasure in capturing my own kids and creating memorable photobooks and keepsakes.

As I’ve shared photos on Facebook and Shutterfly I get questions like, “What camera do you have?” “How did you create that photobook?” “Where can I get that template?”. And as I’ve met other parents through Katie’s various activities I always hear “Well, we bought this camera when Timmy was born because we wanted to take better pictures but I’m really not sure what I’m doing.”

This made me realize that there are LOTS of folks out there with great camera equipment and no clue not just how to use it but how perhaps how to best capture these childhood moments. They also have a few other things in common: they don’t have the time to take a photography course AND they have no aspirations of becoming professional photographers.

So this community is for all these moms that want to:

  • Learn how to use their cameras without having to get a degree in photography
  • Find creative ways to capture their kid’s childhood milestones
  • Share these with friends and families
  • Create memorable keepsakes to share with family and document the joy of childhood

I am here to reassure you that you don’t have to become a professional photographer to take great pictures of your kids using your existing camera equipment. Far from it. The internet is a great resource for learning how to take great pictures. There are wonderful sites out there and you can easily get lost in all there is. But who has the time? And who wants to make the time and financial investment? Yes, it would be wonderful to be able to take that photography course at the local community college but even that won’t be tailored to helping you take great pictures of your kids.

So here’s what’s planned for this website. I will lead you through this journey in a fraction of the time that it took me. You’ll find:

  • Tutorials written either by me or links to the best the web has to offer (without getting overwhelming)
  • Simple sample projects to help you capture these key moments
  • Reviews written from a practical mom’s perspective for products, software, services, and equipment to help you capture and share these precious moments
  • Links to my favorite photography and digital scrapbooking/photobooking resources
  • Timely notification of sales, giveaways, and free resources to save you money and time

My goal is to create a safe, fun community for moms with cameras. Learn from my own journey by subscribing to our blog and see your photography skills grow!
